A 41 year old man from a village in Asturias was caught on radar at 5.41pm yesterday driving at 260 km and hour (161.6 mph) along the A 231 (km 128.8) between León and Burgos.
The maximum punishment for driving at more than 140km an hour above the legal speed limit is a €600 fine and the suspension of the driver's licence for three months, although under the 1973 Penal Code, a driver convicted of "endangering the lives of others" may be sentenced to up to two years in jail.
The officers who clocked him managed to catch up with the driver, and charged him with speeding and dangerous driving before letting him continue on his way.
Surprisingly, given that driving too fast is proven to be one of the main causes of traffic casualties, in a survey carried out by the General Traffic Department last December, 37% of the 1,800 participants admitted that they regularly drive above the legal speed limit.
No less worrying is that 25% admitted that they regularly drink and drive, rising to more than a third for certain demographic profiles.
Encouragingly, only 14.4% admit that they drive while talking on their mobile, and 95% claim that they and their passengers always use safety belts.
